Kilimanjaro, a stratovolcano that last erupted 50 000 years ago has three peaks. The three peaks or cones of Mount Kilimanjaro are Shira at 3962 meters high, the breathtaking Mawenzi at 5149 meters, and Kibo on which Uhuru Peak sits at 5895 meters highest of the three mountains.
Climbers dreaming of reaching and standing on the pinnacle of Africa have the option of different routes namely, Marangu "Coke cola" Route, Lemosho Route, Shira Route, Rongai Route, Northern Circuit Route, and Machame "Wisky" Route. The two most demanding routes are the Umbwe Route, and the most dangerous and now mostly closed Western Breach Route. There is also the descend Mweka Route.
As a climber wanting to reach Uhuru Peak safely and in good spirits, route selection is critical to achieving success. G2G Adventures assisted us with our route selection and valuable advice when we chose the seven-day Machame Route.
In the next blog, I will unpack each route in more detail.
Happy planning and training for your Kili trip,
Monique
